In many countries of the Ibero-American region, biomass covers more than 30% of the national power consumption. The use of biomass energy in industrialised countries is often lower, due to the predominance of “fossil fuels”. Such a situation reached a turning point in the 1970s, with the first oil crisis, which highlighted the unsustainability of a model based on the almost exclusive use of fossil fuels. Today, the biggest threat is the increase in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. In most countries and at international events there is a growing interest in the use of waste as a source of energy, as well as in achieving energy savings and efficiency so as to be able to fulfil the twofold aim of reducing our dependence on energy and the environmental impacts. This publication describes several research projects developed and applied to the real recovery of waste biomass. The return to the use of biomass for energy purposes does not step backwards in technology development; on the contrary, the utilisation of this biological resource is found to be directly linked to new methods of using waste and the development of new procedures and technologies that will allow the production of more advanced high-performance fuels, high energy efficiency, low emissions and prices below those of fossil fuels. Some of these processes are in a commercial phase and others are still being developed, just as in the case of other renewable energy sources. | Il·lustracions en color |
