The book focuses on the social and political evolution of the nobility of the Crown of Aragon during the turbulent sixteenth century, and particularly the life course of four generations of the lineage of the Viscounts of Gallano – the paradigm of all the nobility. Aspects addressed include private life, relationships of kinship and patronage with other social groups, family as the backbone of society, the strategies aimed at maintaining social status and the reproduction mechanisms. The political projection of the nobility within feudal society and the participation of the monarchy in the representative bodies are also examined, as well as the economic and patrimonial foundations upon which their power and wealth were based. The important search conducted to find the widely dispersed family documentation in various archives in Valencia, Barcelona, Toledo and Palermo led to the writing of this book about noble lineages, which is absolutely fundamental for the historiography of Valencia and of the Iberian and Italian territories of the former Crown of Aragon. “[The work of X. Mesado] rounds off the possible approaches to the understanding of the itinerary of this medieval family, which thus becomes, for us, a model of other contemporary families.” Enric Guinot Rodríguez, full professor of medieval history at the University of Valencia. | Il·lustracions en blanc i negre |
