How did a process that was initially loyal to the Spanish Crown lead to independence? Why was republicanism chosen, and what were the dilemmas posed by this decision? How does a revolutionary process take place? At the intersection of these questions, Gabriel Cid examines how political thought was deployed in the process of Chilean independence. In the period from 1808 to 1833, various ideologies sought to interpret the changes that had been brought about by the collapse of the colonial order, and to establish new political certainties at a time of transition towards nationhood. This book reconstructs the intellectual work involved in this process, and discusses the formulation of a new political legitimacy, as well as the disagreements about concepts such as those of republic, equality, freedom, representation, democracy and constitution.
