In 1134, Alfonso I “el Batallador” (the Warrior), King of Aragon and Pamplona, died without heirs to the throne. In his will, he bequeathed his kingdoms to the military orders of the Holy Sepulchre, the Hospital and the Temple. However, the nobility did not accept his will and chose his brother Ramiro, a monk, abbot and bishop as king. He reigned as Ramiro II and married Agnes of Poitou. Petronilla, their daughter, was engaged at the age of one to Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and the couple’s son reigned over Aragon and Catalonia under the name of Alfonso II “the Chaste” or “the Troubadour” (1164-1196). He it was who created a new political entity, known in the documents as the Crown of Aragon from the 13th century onwards, which continued to grow with new conquered territories: the kingdoms of Mallorca, Valencia, Corsica, Sardinia, Naples and Sicily, and the duchies of Athens and Neopatria. His son Peter II, “the Catholic”, was solemnly crowned in Rome by Pope Innocent III in 1204. Like Castile, Portugal, France, England and Poland, the Crown of Aragon was surrounded by ceremonies and artistic representations largely linked to the liturgy and ecclesiastical imagery. But this cultural and ideological construction, like those of the other European kingdoms, differed over the centuries. This book focuses on studying the specific configuration of the images of power of the Crown of Aragon, from its creation in 1164 until it was incorporated into Charles V's imperial, universal and hegemonic project in 1518. | Il·lustracions en color |
