María Campo Alange (Sevilla, 1902 – Madrid, 1986) was a self-taught writer, art critic, researcher and feminist, who was always concerned about the social situation of women. Her first book, Maria Blanchard, which she wrote to make the painter’s work known, introduced her into the world of art and culture. In La secreta guerra de los sexos (1948) she addressed the situation of women from different spheres. This work was published one year before El segundo sexo, by the French author Simone de Beauvoir, with whom she agreed on some ideas. She also put forward her theoretical arguments before the American author Betty Friedan, who belonged to the second wave of feminism.
In 1960, she set up the Seminario de Estudios Sociológicos sobre la Mujer (SESM), a multidisciplinary work team that researched as a means to bring about political and social change. María Campo Alange conducted studies in the field of social sciences as well as in the humanities. Her ideas are still valid in today’s feminism.
