The need to learn more about a professional practice in which the conventions differ among the main subtitling studios in Spain motivated the research presented in this book. The project therefore focuses on the study of translation for subtitling (commercial or conventional, usually interlinguistic, not for deaf people or those with hearing problems), with the essential objective of describing its professional norms. A link to an online questionnaire was sent to subtitling companies in Spain in order to gather data about the methods they use to work in this modality: format of the subtitles, line segmentation, spelling and typographic criteria, and so on. The result is a physical map of the way in which an important part of the work done on the subtitling assembly line is performed. From this, it becomes clear that, even if there are some parameters that can vary between companies or depending on where the subtitles are going to be displayed, there are other elements of subtitling that are performed in a more homogeneous manner and are therefore easier to implement in teaching practice.
