On the 80th anniversary of the infamous Law on the Repression of Freemasonry and Communism of 1 March 1940, this book represents the result of several years of research on the repression of masons in the province of Castelló. These were either members of which comprised one of the five small masons’ organisations (a lodge in Vila-real and four smaller units in Nules, Castelló de la Plana and Torreblanca), in operation between 1905 and 1938, and freemasons from Castelló that were initiated in lodges in the rest of country. They include remarkable characters such as Marco Miranda, Sos Baynat, Royo Gómez, Pascual-Leone and Peña Masip. The Franco Regime was essentially repressive and freemasons were among its principal victims, sometimes unfairly forgotten. Vicent Sampedro carries out an exercise in historical memory with an in-depth study of the men who were the masons of Castelló and how they were punished by multiple forms of repression, particularly by the Special Court for the Repression of Freemasonry and Communism (TERMC), with actions that lasted until 1964. They deserve compensation inspired by the principles of memory, dignity, justice and truth. Along with the rest of the victims, they created an ethical reference for our democratic system.
