The failure of the Liberal regime to integrate the Antilles into the Spanish State and the progressive emergence of a national consciousness in Cuba, laid the foundations for the development of autonomism in Spanish political theory. The defeat of the revolutionary path, between 1868 and 1878, allows the development of Cuban autonomy during the Restoration period as a progressive route towards national construction; an alternative to the ground-breaking project represented by separatism. The crisis in the colonial relations model during the last quarter of the 19th century meant that theses of autonomy were gradually taken up by increasingly broad and diverse metropolitan political sectors, and this made it possible to grant autonomy to Cuba and Puerto Rico in 1897.
