In the 16th century, the Spanish Monarchy set up a court, initially an itinerant one, but based permanently in Madrid from 1561. However, for several periods in the 17th and 18th centuries, the court was transferred to Valladolid, Seville or some border cities. Celebrations of festivities for births, weddings, vows and proclamations, funerals and devotions related to the Monarchy, such as Corpus Christi or the canonisations of saints, were an essential part of the courtly ritual and protocol. This fourth volume of the Baroque Triumphs series offers a new repertoire of more than 400 prints, canvases and drawings – some previously unpublished – showing the magnificent and impressive festivities at the Spanish royal court, together with a complete analysis and study of their symbolic and ideological importance. The format of the volume maintains the rich and carefully prepared publishing style of the series while offering a complete and previously unpublished corpus.
