Writing the story of Virtudes Cuevas is intended to throw the spotlight on the women who participated in the anti-Fascist struggle in two consecutive wars ¬– the Spanish Civil War and World War Two – and give them the dignity they deserve. Her biography shows her to be a great example of coherence and commitment to her ideology. Her life story shows again and again that women like her were doubly forgotten and double wronged. To the premeditated oblivion created by the power structures of the Spanish State – first Francoist and then constitutional monarchist – must be added the great damage suffered by these anti-Fascist Republican women. These determined fighters against totalitarianism suffered particularly intense and cruel repression, exile, torture and even, in many cases, systematic, organised murder in Nazi extermination camps | Il·lustracions en color | Ressenya Cultur Plaza / Ressenya Levante el mercantil valenciano 17/02/19 / Ressenya Asparkia número 34 (2019) / Ressenya VilaWeb |
