Nules became an essential economic centre of the Republican rear-guard thanks to the export of citrus fruits after the military coup of 1936. There was also an interesting socio-political movement, and it played an important role in receiving refugees. When the front arrived there in 1938, Nules suffered exceptionally badly from the horrors of the war because of its vital geostrategic location. Its streets and fields were the scene of terrible fighting. The artillery and the destructive power of the Condor Legion left it devastated in a similar way to other places, such as Gernika, which have remained in the collective imagination.
